Needs Vs Wants
How do I teach my child the difference between needs and wants?
The needs-versus-wants distinction is the foundational lesson of financial literacy, usually prompted by a child's meltdown over a toy or candy at the store. Early Ambition Kids teaches this through the Architect/Builder framework: an Architect dreams up what they want, but a Builder makes deliberate choices about what to act on now versus later.
Needs: food, shelter, safety, basic clothing.
Wants: toys, candy, extra treats, non-essential items.
The bridge concept: delayed gratification — saving for a want after needs are covered.
This lesson is covered directly in Little Money Architects' "Builder Mindset" section.
