Right Age
At what age should I start teaching my kids about money?
Ages 6-8 (Value Recognition): Grasping the difference between needs and wants, and understanding that money is exchanged for goods.
Ages 8-12 (The Earn & Save Engine): Introduction to delayed gratification, goal-setting, and the concept of "paying yourself first."
Ages 12+ (Capital Allocation): Moving beyond savings to understand compound interest, assets versus liabilities, and how to make money work independently.
Financial literacy should start as early as age 6, with concepts introduced in stages rather than all at once. Ages 6-8 focus on value recognition — needs versus wants and the idea that money is exchanged for goods. Ages 8-12 introduce earning, saving, and delayed gratification. Ages 12+ move into compound interest and asset building.
